The usage of ontologies on the Internet has been studied and discussed since the introduction of the Semantic Web. However many open issues still need to be tackled. Specifically we are interested in finding solutions to fill the gap between unstructured data, represented by the Web pages, and the formal knowledge, represented in ontologies. The ultimate goal is to develop and deploy semantically-aware applications that can be processed by software systems or agents. This research would contribute to the realization of the next generation of the Web, the Web 3.0, in which we expect to develop tools that are able to extract semantically related facts from aggregated information. The power of ontologies will be fully exploited only when we are able to provide non-expert users with tools and interfaces to use them in seamless fashion. This includes the processes of building, applying and maintaining them using automatic techniques. The following key questions are on the focus of the intended:
The First International Workshop on Ontologies on the Web, WEBONT 2010, represents an opportunity to discuss both the state of the art and future research directions for the use of ontologies on the Web. The workshop is open to both research and industrial contributions. We solicit papers that address, but are not limited to, the following topics:
